sarah palin less than a month. our most high-profile hire, joe biden, had only been with us six weeks. we still did not know joe the plumber yet. so it's funny to look back on that time. remember coming into september four years ago and we had a big convention in denver, an amazing summer, a fund toward that went off flawlessly, we had rolled out our new vice president and rolling in to september and we have a convention that big and we feel we have momentum and the next day john mccain announces sarah palin as vice presidents. you could just feel something all of a sudden. people can say what about how ready she was, but in that moment sarah palin made a pretty grand entrance onto the national stage. she blew through. i often talk about that as hurricane sarah. we had the republican convention. there were two hurricane events in my mind. they had to cancel the first day of their convention and then there was hurricane sarah. the head wind was still for about 18 days. john mccain came out of his convention in september with a three-point lead. that stretched to about six or eigh

bill from nebraska liked the ball. --senator kerrey and joe biden voted for the bill. that was an important piece of legislation. can you explain to us why did you vote against cutting spending? why did you vote against requiring people to work for their welfare check? and why did you vote against that landmark piece of legislation? >> you have 90 seconds. >> first of all, that is several questions. i did not vote against cutting spending. we supported the george bush budget in 1990. we did the same thing in 1993. and i worked with john kasic and newt gingrich rich, and it got the job done. we balanced the budget. the unemployment rate was going down and poverty rates were going down. other than that, it didn't work. i didn't like the welfare bill. i voted against it because i didn't believe it provided the kind of child care and work support we needed to provide. we came back in, in 1997, and did it. i don't oppose of people receiving welfare to have to work. i think it is a good thing to do. i was governor in 1983 when we were in recession. we had no tax increase over that food.

joe biden voted for the bill. that was an important piece of legislation. vote againstp cutting spending, requiring people to work for their checks, and against that landmark legislation? >> i did not boast against -- i did not vote against cutting spending p. i work with john t. sick and newt gingrich in 1997, and eat a balanced budget. it got the job done. the balanced the budget. we were paying off debt. the unemployment rate was going down. other than that it did not work. i did not like the welfare bill, because it did not provide the kind of child care support that we needed to provide, and became in in 1997 and did it. i did not require -- i did not oppose people of the kind to have to work. i do not disagree with that position at all. to say that i have opposed spending cuts is inaccurate. i was governor in 1983 when we were in recession. week lowered the tax on food as a consequence of a significant effort by the legislature. it was every interest group in the state that lined up. spend more money here, there. we held the line. in this campaign, i have endorsed republic

made for a long trip home for vice president joe biden. his plane had to be diverted to dulles because of low visibility. it was the second time weather impacted his travel yesterday. the plane also had to abort it first attempt at a landing in charlotte because of a thunderstorm. that caused the vice president to be about an hour late to a campaign rally. >> one of our producers drove in around midnight and there was fog. i had a lot of it this morning. how long will it be around? >> actually it's lifted in some area, some areas are still dense. so it's patchy. and as we look at the current visibilities now, reagan national is down to about half a mile which isn't too bad and prince georges county, three miles. but farther to the west and north, parts of west virginia, the shenandoah valley, advi visibility down under a third of a mile. so allow yourself extra time as you're heading out this morning. certainly use the low beam headlights. that will help your visibility. right now it's fairly mild and the air is thick with humidity, of course. it's in the low to mid-60s montgom
